Applewood Academy’s mission is to maintain academic placements through the development of therapeutic
relationships, the application of behavioral management techniques, the implementation of individualized learning programs, and continuous clinical and academic support. It is our vision that children with specialized treatment needs will have access to high quality, compassionate, and therapeutic educational programming that allows for the simultaneous delivery of educational and therapeutic interventions.
Applewood Academy for Progressive Learning’s students experience difficulties attending traditional academic placements. Often they are identified as having learning disabilities, mild to moderate intellectual deficiencies, developmental disabilities, behavioral, mood and/or anxiety disorders, or autism. Applewood Academy for Progressive Learning provides short and long term educational/therapeutic programming for students in this situation. We understand the challenges that families face with traditional academic settings. We work through a multidisciplinary treatment team to treat the underlying mental health issues, create a positive learning environment for the student and maximize the student’s learning potential. Applewood Academy for Progressive Learning is open to any child in need. Any parent or guardian in the community may refer their child to Applewood Academy. Educators, Mental Health staff, and Parent Therapists are the primary providers of Applewood’s treatment-based educational programming. Applewood’s success is based on the belief that educators, in combination with trained mental health professionals, clinical staff, and parents/guardians are the facilitators of learning and that everyone is an important member of the treatment team. The program monitors a variety of outcome measures, and provides the simultaneous delivery of individualized treatment goals along with Ministry approved academics appropriate to the needs of the individual child. The residential component is delivered via the Parent Therapist (with Child & Youth Worker support within a family modeled home) caring for up to 6 youth in each home. |
